Ronkonkoma and Lake Ronkonkoma sit at the geographic and transportation center of Long Island. Ronkonkoma is a hamlet and census-designated place within the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, covering approximately 8.1 square miles and home to approximately 18,955 residents as of the 2020 census. Lake Ronkonkoma is an adjacent hamlet and census-designated place located primarily within the Town of Brookhaven, covering approximately 4.9 square miles and home to approximately 18,289 residents. Despite their different municipal boundaries, the two hamlets function as a single community in daily life, sharing ZIP code 11779, the same major commercial corridors, and a common identity centered on the lake, the railroad station, and the airport.
The name Ronkonkoma comes from an Algonquian expression meaning boundary fishing-lake, a reference to the role Lake Ronkonkoma played as a sacred gathering point among the Indigenous peoples of the region. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the lake had made this area one of Long Island’s most popular resort destinations. Hotels and summer cottages lined the shores, and the lake drew visitors from across the metropolitan area seeking fresh air and recreation. That resort era gave way to the post-World War II suburban expansion, but its legacy is still visible in the converted bungalows and cottages that line the lakeshore and surrounding streets. Ronkonkoma also holds a unique place in American transportation history: the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, the first road in the United States designed exclusively for automobiles, terminated here.
Today Ronkonkoma is one of the more diverse communities in central Suffolk County. Ronkonkoma CDP is approximately 77.7% White with 20.9% Hispanic or Latino residents, a median household income of approximately $125,534, and a homeownership rate of approximately 80.5%. Lake Ronkonkoma CDP is approximately 69.9% White non-Hispanic with 12.4% foreign-born residents, a median household income of approximately $102,608, and a homeownership rate of approximately 70.3%. Median home values have risen sharply in both areas, reaching approximately $467,600 in Ronkonkoma CDP and approximately $484,700 in Lake Ronkonkoma CDP as of recent data.

Lake Ronkonkoma is the largest lake on Long Island and one of the most storied bodies of water in the region. It is a kettle hole lake formed by a buried block of glacial ice, approximately 65 feet deep at its southeastern end, and fed entirely by the groundwater table rather than by any surface stream. Because it has no surface inlet or outlet, the lake level rises and falls with the local water table in ways that have no obvious relationship to local rainfall and that have never been fully explained. The lake is located entirely within the Ronkonkoma CDP in the Town of Islip, even though the surrounding hamlets share its name.
The lake carries an enduring legend rooted in the area’s Native American heritage. The most widely known version holds that Princess Ronkonkoma, an Indigenous princess who drowned in the lake, calls young men to the water each year. The story is woven into local identity in a way that few community legends manage to be. On a more documented note, the Town of Brookhaven’s beach and park on the eastern shore of the lake was renamed Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Park in 2006 in honor of Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, the Medal of Honor recipient who served as head lifeguard and beach manager at this park during his high school years and college summers before his death in Afghanistan. These layers of history give Lake Ronkonkoma a sense of place that shapes how families think about living, staying, or relocating within this community.
The Ronkonkoma LIRR station is the busiest train station in Suffolk County, serving approximately 17,000 daily commuters. It is the eastern terminus of the Ronkonkoma Branch and the western terminus of the Greenport Branch, signed as Ronkonkoma LI MacArthur Airport in recognition of its role as a multimodal hub. An express train from Ronkonkoma reaches Penn Station in Manhattan in approximately 65 minutes, and the station also connects via East Side Access to Grand Central Terminal. In January 2025, New York State announced that Amtrak’s Northeast Regional service will terminate at Ronkonkoma, with stops at Jamaica and Hicksville, making this the only station outside New York City in the region with direct Amtrak service. The Town of Islip is separately developing a new Long Island MacArthur Airport passenger terminal directly adjacent to the LIRR station, with a pedestrian walkway connection and $150 million in state funding committed in February 2025.
Surrounding the station, the $1.2 billion Station Yards development by TRITEC Real Estate is transforming 53 acres of previously underused land into a transit-oriented mixed-use district. The project includes 1,450 residential units, 360,000 square feet of office space, and 195,000 square feet of retail space. Phase one, Alston Station Yards with 489 residential units, opened in 2020. Phase two, The Core with 388 units, is underway. For families in Ronkonkoma whose households are organized around the LIRR commute, the station and the transformation happening around it are inseparable from the financial profile of the community and from what properties in this area are worth today.
One of the most consequential facts for Ronkonkoma families navigating a divorce is that the two adjacent hamlets are served by different school districts. Ronkonkoma CDP within the Town of Islip is served almost entirely by the Connetquot Central School District, which includes Cherokee Street Elementary School, Helen B. Duffield Elementary School, and Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, along with Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School and Connetquot High School. Lake Ronkonkoma CDP is served primarily by the Sachem Central School District, the second largest suburban school district in New York State, enrolling approximately 13,500 students across 10 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high schools, Sachem High School North and Sachem High School East. A smaller section of Lake Ronkonkoma is also served by the Middle Country Central School District.
When parents in this area divorce, the question of which district governs a child’s education depends on where each parent ultimately lives. Because the Town of Islip and Town of Brookhaven line runs through the middle of what feels like a single community, parents who live a short distance apart may be in entirely different school districts. A move from the Connetquot CSD portion of Ronkonkoma to the Sachem CSD portion of Lake Ronkonkoma, or vice versa, may trigger a school change that courts will carefully scrutinize. We help clients build custody plans that account for these geographic realities and present the court with a clear, specific proposal that protects the child’s educational continuity.
Long Island MacArthur Airport, owned and operated by the Town of Islip and located within the Ronkonkoma hamlet, was activated in May 1943 and began commercial service in 1960. It is one of two commercial service airports on Long Island. The Town of Islip Foreign Trade Zone, adjacent to the airport and established in 1982, is the only designated foreign trade zone on Long Island outside of New York City. Northrop Grumman maintains a hypersonic test and manufacturing facility adjacent to the airport. The Bountiful Company, one of the largest vitamin and supplement manufacturers in the United States, is headquartered in Ronkonkoma. These institutions anchor a substantial employment base that includes professionals commuting to Manhattan, skilled tradespeople, and industrial and logistics workers employed closer to home.
In divorce cases involving Ronkonkoma households, the employment source shapes both the income calculation and the custody schedule. A shift worker at the airport or a manufacturing facility has a different availability pattern than a professional commuting five days a week to Penn Station. The custody plan and maintenance calculation both need to reflect the actual employment reality of the household. We take the time to understand each client’s specific work situation and build legal arguments and proposals that reflect the facts of the case.
Property values in Ronkonkoma have moved sharply upward in recent years, driven by demand for transit-accessible housing and the transformation of the area around the LIRR station. Homes near Station Yards and the LIRR corridor have experienced appreciation that differs from properties further from the transit hub, and the ongoing development of additional residential and commercial phases of Station Yards continues to influence values in the surrounding area. The planned airport terminal connection, if completed on its anticipated timeline, will add another layer of transit value to properties in the immediate vicinity.
In a divorce, establishing an accurate and current value for a Ronkonkoma property requires an appraiser who understands both the market trend and the differences between specific streets and neighborhoods within the community. A generic Suffolk County median captures none of what is happening on a specific block of Ronkonkoma where values are responding to development and infrastructure changes that are specific to this location. We retain qualified appraisers with current knowledge of this market and challenge any valuation that fails to reflect the specific property being divided.
When both spouses agree on all major issues including property division, child custody, support, and spousal maintenance, an uncontested divorce is the more efficient and cost-effective path. We prepare and file all required documents and guide you through every step from start to finish.
Typical cost ranges from $2,000 to $5,000 in legal fees plus court filing fees. Typical timeline is 3 to 6 months from filing to final judgment.
The Process
When spouses disagree on custody, property division, or financial support, contested divorce requires careful preparation and firm advocacy throughout the process. We help clients understand their realistic options while working toward resolution whenever possible. Typical timeline is 1 to 2 years depending on complexity and court scheduling.
Common Disputes Include
Custody cases in the Ronkonkoma area require specific attention to which school district governs a child’s education and how any potential relocation across the Connetquot CSD and Sachem CSD boundary would affect that child’s school placement. Beyond the school question, the parenting plan must also account for each parent’s work schedule, particularly for households organized around the LIRR station for daily Manhattan commutes.
We handle all aspects of child custody matters including legal custody, physical custody, parenting time schedules, school holiday and summer arrangements, and relocation disputes. Where parents can reach agreement, we help structure that agreement in a way that is durable and specific enough to prevent future conflicts. Where agreement is not possible, we advocate firmly for your children’s stability and best interests at every stage of the court process.
Types of Custody
New York uses the Child Support Standards Act formula to calculate the basic child support obligation. The formula applies a fixed percentage to the combined parental income up to a statutory cap, with the court retaining discretion to address income above that threshold.
Number of Children | Percentage of Combined Income |
1 child | 17% |
2 children | 25% |
3 children | 29% |
4 children | 31% |
5 or more children | 35% |
Additional expenses such as health insurance, childcare, and educational costs are typically divided between parents in proportion to income. We ensure that all relevant income and expense figures are accurately represented in any support calculation or court order.
New York is an equitable distribution state, meaning marital property is divided fairly rather than automatically 50-50. Marital property includes assets acquired during the marriage, while separate property such as premarital assets or inheritances is generally not subject to division. In Ronkonkoma, where property values have risen substantially and where the Station Yards development is actively changing the premium attached to properties near the LIRR station, establishing accurate current values for distribution purposes requires appraisers with specific and current market knowledge.
We work with qualified appraisers who understand Ronkonkoma’s specific market dynamics and can support a defensible valuation for use in settlement negotiations or court proceedings. We also account for all significant marital assets beyond the home, including retirement accounts, investment portfolios, business interests, and any residential units in the Station Yards development or surrounding new construction.
Common Marital Assets in Ronkonkoma Divorces
Spousal maintenance provides financial support to a lower-earning spouse following divorce. New York courts consider the length of the marriage, each spouse’s income and earning capacity, the standard of living during the marriage, and each spouse’s contributions to the household. In Ronkonkoma, where many households include one spouse commuting to Manhattan on the LIRR and earning a New York City professional salary while the other works locally or manages the household, the income disparity can be substantial and maintenance can be a major component of the overall financial settlement.
Types of Spousal Maintenance
An uncontested divorce where both spouses agree on all issues typically takes 3 to 6 months from the time all paperwork is filed with Suffolk County Supreme Court in Central Islip. A contested divorce typically takes 1 to 2 years depending on the complexity of the issues and court scheduling.
That depends on where each parent lives following the divorce. Ronkonkoma CDP is served primarily by the Connetquot Central School District, and Lake Ronkonkoma CDP is served primarily by the Sachem Central School District. Because the Town of Islip and Town of Brookhaven boundary runs through the middle of what feels like one community, parents who live relatively close to each other may be in different districts. Courts will carefully evaluate any custody or relocation arrangement that would result in a school change.
A parent who commutes daily from the Ronkonkoma LIRR station to Manhattan leaves early and returns late, and those hours must be honestly reflected in any proposed custody schedule. Courts look at each parent’s actual availability. We help clients present custody plans that account for the realities of the LIRR commute while demonstrating how the children’s needs will be consistently met on both weekday and weekend parenting time.
The family home is a marital asset subject to equitable distribution. Options typically include one spouse buying out the other at an appraised value, selling the home and dividing the proceeds, or in limited circumstances involving children, a deferred sale arrangement. Given the rapid appreciation of Ronkonkoma-area properties and the influence of Station Yards on values near the LIRR corridor, a current and market-specific appraisal is particularly important before any buyout figure is agreed upon.
New York uses the Child Support Standards Act formula, applying a fixed percentage to combined parental income up to a statutory cap. The percentages are 17% for one child, 25% for two, 29% for three, 31% for four, and 35% for five or more. Additional costs including health insurance and childcare are typically shared in proportion to income.
Properties near the Ronkonkoma LIRR station and the Station Yards development are subject to market forces that differ from properties further from the transit corridor. Ongoing construction, the anticipated completion of additional residential and retail phases, and the planned airport terminal connection all affect how an appraiser should approach a specific property in this area. We work with appraisers who track these factors and can establish a value that reflects the market at the time of the divorce.
Retirement accounts and pension benefits earned during the marriage are marital property. Division typically requires a Qualified Domestic Relations Order directing the plan administrator to divide the benefit according to the divorce settlement terms. For employees of Northrop Grumman, government agencies, school districts, or other large area employers, pension division can involve complex valuation and documentation. We prepare these documents and coordinate with employers, plan administrators, and the court.
If both parents remain within the same school district boundary after the divorce, children can generally continue in their current school. In Ronkonkoma, where the Connetquot CSD and Sachem CSD serve adjacent areas, a short-distance move can trigger a school change. We help clients think through these implications before finalizing any custody or relocation arrangement.
Legal custody refers to the right to make major decisions about a child’s education, healthcare, and religious upbringing. Physical custody refers to where the child lives and how parenting time is divided between the parents. In Suffolk County, joint legal custody is common, meaning both parents share decision-making authority. Physical custody arrangements vary widely depending on each family’s circumstances and are built around the child’s school calendar, activities, and each parent’s availability.
Yes, spousal maintenance may be awarded when there is a meaningful income disparity between spouses. In a Ronkonkoma household where one spouse commutes to Manhattan on the LIRR and earns a New York City professional salary while the other works locally or has been out of the workforce, the disparity can be significant. Courts consider the length of the marriage, each spouse’s earning capacity, contributions made during the marriage including homemaking and child-rearing, and the standard of living established during the marriage. We help clients understand what is realistic and advocate for an outcome that fairly reflects their contributions and circumstances.
Yes. We serve Spanish-speaking clients throughout the Ronkonkoma area and surrounding central Suffolk communities. Consultations and legal documents can be handled in Spanish where needed.
